Friday very windy, high risk of fire danger

SIOUX FALLS, SD (Dakota News Now) – Wind warning and Red flag warnings will be in effect across the region until tonight. Wind gusts up to 50 mph will be possible. Add low humidity and dry conditions and we have a high risk of fire danger later today.

It’s going to be very windy as we ride through the rest of the day. The wind will be blowing between 20 and 30 mph with gusts between 40 and 50 mph. At times, wind gusts will exceed 50 mph, especially in central and western South Dakota. The issue will be how dry it has been lately in central and western South Dakota. There will be a major concern for grassland fires, so it is extremely important not to burn. Friday’s highs will be in the low to mid-50s.

Heading into the weekend we will be cooling down to the 40s for highs on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will be sunnier, but cloud cover will increase on Sunday. Temperatures will be in the 40s for most of us on Sunday, but will hit the 50s in western South Dakota.

Next week promises to be more active as we track precipitation beginning Monday evening and continuing through next Thursday. The wind will intensify and this should impact much of the region this time around. Most of this will fall as rain, but some mixing snowflakes will be possible. It’s too far to see if we’ll be looking at snow accumulations, but stay with your First Alert weather team as we get closer!
